Welcome to the Irving YES Lecture Series!
In its second semester, the Irving YES (Youth for Environmental Sustainability) Lecture Series at North Lake College, presents sustainability issues as they relate to American history.
In the iYES Lecture Series, sustainability expert Lori De La Cruz, ABC, correlates economic, environmental and societal issues with U.S. history. She recounts past behaviors, discusses how they have impacted our present-day situations and encourages students to express their observations on what their environmental future looks like.
At the beginning of the semester, students were presented with a unique scenario: Imagine that you need to design a spaceship that could leave Earth and return in 100 years with its crew alive, healthy and happy. An ecosystem that will provide food, clean water, medicinal plants and fiber for a century. There are no escape hatches and what happens on the spaceship stays on the spaceship for 100 years.
To explain and illustrate the scenario, students viewed an amazing video narrated by famed astronomer, Carl Sagan. Watch the video to see our home planet in a new light.
